Rich ‘angel’ rescues air display

Robert Gaines-Cooper pledged to back next year’s show.

A MULTI-millionaire from the Seychelles has secured the future of the Jersey International Air Display.

Following yesterday’s spectacular event, businessman Robert Gaines-Cooper, who did his national service in the RAF, pledged to back next year’s show.

And after hearing of the huge financial losses incurred when last year’s display was cancelled because of bad weather, offered to wipe the debts, freeing the event of its financial burden.

The extraordinary act of generosity has been hailed by chief air display organiser Deputy Mike Higgins as an incredible gift of kindness.

Deputy Higgins, who met Mr Gaines-Cooper in the mid-1990s, said he had never had a contract with the businessman and that their deals were done each year with a simple handshake.
