FORMER Jersey shotputter Jamie Stevenson says he is lucky to be alive after his heart stopped beating for five minutes during a cardiac arrest at a strongman competition in the UK.

While defending his crown at the Junior Strongest Man event in Colchester, the young Jerseyman suffered a cardiac arrest and seizure and was rescued by World Champion Powerlifter David ‘Bulldog’ Beattie and TV presenter Colin Bryce.

In a message posted on a body-building forum, the 22-year-old thanked friends for their support and said that his collapse had been ‘very upsetting’ for everyone watching.

And in a subsequent post on Facebook he confirmed that he was now at home in Leicester, having been given the ‘all-clear’ by doctors at Broomfield Hospital Chelmsford.
