Clamping: ‘No change this year’
So The Crimes Continue!!!
Despite a 2009 States decision to ban clamping, Jersey is now lagging behind the rest of Britain. It was banned in Scotland two decades ago and action is now being taken in the UK to make it illegal.
Home Affairs Minister Ian Le Marquand said that the practice of wheel clamping would remain a legal ‘grey area’ for now, but was a priority for next year.
He said that the UK had moved to ban it and had set up a civil penalty system allowing people to put parking tickets on cars left on private land without permission, and that Jersey would follow suit.
Senator Le Marquand, a former lawyer and Magistrate, said that the Jersey model would follow the system in the UK, and he repeated his view that wheel clamping was unlawful under Jersey law.
