Domestic abuse seasonal danger
December is traditionally the worst time for domestic violence in Jersey and last year a third of domestic incidents reported to the police that month occurred between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. A local charity now wants potential abusers to deal with their behaviour before it is too late.
New figures show that in the past 12 months, Jersey police dealt with 1,035 domestic incidents, 351 of which were recorded as crimes and 90 per cent of which involved violence.
Children were present in 46 per cent of cases and alcohol was considered to be a factor in 51 per cent. Overall, nine per cent of all crime recorded in the last 12 months was domestic. It was also the most prominent reason for child protection referrals made to the Children’s Service last year.
