"Six Murdered In Jersey - Including Two Young Children"
Jersey police have just confirmed that six people are dead after a knife attack in St Helier.
The dead are two men, two women and two children aged between five and six.
They are believed to have been stabbed in a flat in Victoria Cresent, Upper Midvale Road.
It happened at just after 3pm this afternoon. The identities of those who have died have not been released.
A 30-year-old man is in police custody in Jersey Hospital where he is undergoing surgery.
The sixth person who died was a woman who underwent surgery in the last hour.
Armed police are at the scene now.
The Emergency Department closed at 3.10 pm and re-opened at 17.50 following the incident earlier today. Between these times, the Hospital declared a major incident.
The Emergency Department re-opened at 17:50, and the Emergency Dept and the rest of the Hospital are now open as normal.
JERSEY POLICE STATEMENT
The police have made the following statement:
"States of Jersey Police have launched a murder investigation following a critical incident involving a knife attack at St Helier earlier today (Sunday, August 14th 2011)
Police were called to a flat at Victoria Crescent, Upper Midvale Road, St Helier just after 3pm today after reports of a multiple stabbing incident. At least five people have been confirmed dead, and another is in a critical condition at Jersey Hospital, undergoing surgery.
A 30-year-old man is currently in Police custody at Jersey Hospital where he is also recovering from surgery.
While efforts are being made to confirm the identities of the victims, a number of witnesses have come forward and are currently being interviewed by Police. Forensic officers are at the scene, together with a number of uniformed officers and detectives.
Head of Crime Services Stewart Gull, who is leading the inquiry, said “Clearly this complex investigation is in its very early stages as we try to establish exactly what happened. We are appealing to anyone who may have any information to contact us.
“We are mindful, too, of the impact of any such serious and tragic incident on the local community, and we have Police Officers in the area to support the investigation and local people.”
