"States Agree Changes To Immigration Rights"

Deputy Roy Le Hérissier

THE unqualified housing sector which forces immigrants to rent substandard and overpriced accommodation is a ‘social stain’ on Jersey’s reputation, States Members were told yesterday.
The damning comment was made by Deputy Roy Le Hérissier as he spoke in favour of wide-ranging changes to legislation to manage the population that have been proposed by the Chief Minister.
As well as tightening controls on who can live and work in Jersey, they include giving immigrants with less than ten years’ residency tenancy rights for the first time.
Members voted by 46 votes to two to adopt the principles of the law after debate began on the reforms yesterday afternoon.
