"Sunday - Day Of Rest"

Eight youths appear in court for brawl

Eight youths appeared in Jersey's Magistrates Court today charged with a mass brawl in St Helier at the weekend.

The four men and four women - aged between 18 and 22 - were arrested after a large fight in New Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

One man remains in hospital with a broken jaw.

Daniel Stephen Mandel, 22, Carl Marcel Henriette, 21, Natalie Purdie, 21, Glenn Joseph Botterill, 19, James Edward Martin,18, Kerrie Jarvie, 19, Michaela Gaffney, 19, Megan Louise John, 21 have been charged with the offence of Affray.

Today the court was shown CCTV footage of the fight, which went on for six minutes.

It took that long for the police to arrive because it was such a busy weekend and they were attending one or two other fights at the same time.

Reporting restrictions govern how much can be reported at this time so the case is not prejudiced, but what we can report is that the four men and four women were told that their case is likely to be heard at the Royal Court instead of the Magistrates Court because of the brutality of the attack.

Sentencing powers at the Royal Court are greater.

The case has been adjourned for two weeks.
